When I was pregnant with my second child my eldest was 2 and he asked how the baby got in mummys tummy and how it came out and we told him in suitable language for his age but without fairies storks or gooseberry bush nonsense..
When I was expecting my daughter my eldest son then 6 took great joy and pride in explaining to his 4 year old brother exactly where the baby came from.. And my daughter was about 3 when she was educated in a far more natural way..
I came down one morning to find the children eating breakfast while sitting on the table looking out of the dining room window, watching the sheep mating... A few months later they sat and watched the lambs being born.. there was no mystery for them.
I also shared in that fashion. Likewise the facts of life. They were told anything biological that they expressed an interest in, and always before the age if five.

Why wouldn't you?
I remember at secondary school and one of the girls suddenly bust into the classroom in hysterics. She was screaming that she was dying , she was bleeding and leaking and she was going to die...
Poor girl was 13 and had started her period but she had no clue and had to be taken to the nurses room to have it explained to her.
How awful for her and how negligent of her parents.. ( I say parents because my father explained to me about where babies came from)

That's awful, cassie: a young teenager in that day & age not knowing about periods is shocking. When I was in secondary school, we had sanitary products and classes explaining about such things. Plus, my parents didn't leave me in the dark. I have a lot of sympathy for that once 13 year old girl.

We also had towel dispensers in the wc and sex ed lessons .. I have a feeling she had not attended due to religious beliefs.
I knew what periods were, but when mine started, I didn't know what to line my underwear with lol I used a pantyliner from a box kept in the restroom and bled through it, so then I thought I was bleeding too much and was scared. My mom had to show me what else to use after that, she just didn't keep everything in the bathroom lol

I was raised catholic, but had very liberal parents. I was not left in the dark about periods and the suchlike. I was lucky to not have strict religious beliefs put upon me as a child. I am still a Christian, but I don't read the bible - except at church - and respect others and their beliefs.
Anyhow, children should be praised for having an imagination: and using that imagination. Creativity should be rewarded, too, and not punished. Even as an adult I love my imagination. I always will.
I grew up with parents who didn't believe (basically atheists), but I always thought their was something- and a woman who lived next door to me at the time used to come round and read me the bible and teach me about god and heaven. she would only come when my mother was out, she hated her
long story short (or shorter) she started taking me to the local church on sundays where I felt I really fit in and it became a regular thing for me
well 1 day she vanished from our street without any notice , and later we found out (well, we basically found out she'd gone against her religion and killed someone). mother was like see?. told you religion is fake, anymore of that and I'll throw you out
she ended up throwing me out anyway (not because of religion, because of childhood abuse) and I was able to follow my own beliefs for once in my life.
When I was a child, I did believe in God. I prayed every night.
I eventually stopped (as a teen) because I was developing OCD and mental issues around my health in relation to religion and God. I started to think bad things would happen if I didn't pray. I had to cut it out for my own well-being at the time. I turned more to being agnostic and spiritual.. feeling connected to the Earth and mankind... and putting positive energy into the world. That might sound silly to some, too ;p

I think it was unfair of your family to put the killing and the xian together in such a fashion. When we have popes, archbishops, and monks blessing weapons, we cannot expect the religious to respect life any more than atheists do.

It's a shame to me when life or others take us from childhood beliefs that were good for us. Sometimes they're just what we need when we're adults dealing with mental health issues and tough times.
When I was very little, I sang little songs to God that I made up myself and totally understood that He loves me. It was simple to just believe. As life continued on, times got tough and I gradually let religion complicate things - there wasn't much simple faith left in me, and I was trying to earn things through good behaviour and sticking to checklists. Some of that resulted from the way that I was taught at church and home, with a focus on the lists of good behaviour, but I'm sure part of it was that I gravitated toward *doing* rather than just being in relationship.
Eventually, doing wasn't enough and life had become a huge mess. I'd married someone who just wanted power and control, not love and partnership. I was stressed out trying to cover everything he didn't want to handle. There didn't seem anywhere to go but back to simple faith.
And it works! I'm so much more relaxed and flexible, and it's easier to love others when you really know you're loved. Having a relationship with God (like He's Father, friend, and King to me) teaches me how to have good relationships with other people.
So, childhood beliefs can be smarter than adult beliefs at times...

Children are usually incredibly open-minded: it is a shame when they lose that as adults and "become real". Now I don't believe in fairies or the suchlike but I do use my imagination to create stories. Of course, the subjects of these stories are pure fantasy, but that's what makes them so enjoyable. I don't believe in religious beliefs as such: even though I do mention things like that in my stories. I'd be mad if I actually believed there was a master or whatever following me about [like in my only novella]. It is pretend, pure and simple.
I do feel because I was praised for having an imagination as a child, I am able to make up stories and use that imagination. I don't want to see into hell myself, like the fictional character John. But I enjoyed writing about that character and seeing what he'd decide. Of course, he dies. But he is an interesting character and I enjoyed writing about him and his destiny.
I guess I am "real" but love making stories up and adding excitement to them with situations that'll never happen to anyone in real life.
I love thinking and discussing what if scenarios... lol it's fun to me, even if it goes into dark places sometimes.
Discovery or National Geographic did a great docu series about what if situations.. One was what if JFK hadnt been shot and another was what if Dr Marin Luther King had not been murdered,,they explored how this might have changed the course of history and based on whats known of the persons views and direction /goals what might have been changed .
They were very good and we enjoyed the what ifs very much.

Ooh, that sounds interesting. Those are perfect examples, too... what a different world we might have if those who were making positive changes got to continue to do so...
